Calema is one of our favorite places in Santa Maria. It's very laid-back, the staff is very friendly and the caipirinhas are great! The happy hour which is more like a 'happy day' is from 2 pm till 10 pm. After 10 Calema becomes more of a dancing and a place where some people go 'to pick-up a date'. We enjoyed sitting on the terrace and chat with other visitors while we had a drink before going to dinner.
On Friday and Saturday evening the main street is closed for traffic and they put tables and chairs on the street. It can get very crouded. Good fun place to hang-out. Went to this bar a few times and discovered the local cocktail 'capriani' or something like that! It was a mix of grogg and lime, delicious.
Good service in this quaint popular bar. Cheap and friendly where you can sit and watch the world go by. Met some great people here. This is a good place to stop during your night out, as it will not disappoint. Cheap drinks during happy hour, and relaxed and great atmosphere. We are in Cape Verde for a month but seem to always gravitate here for a few early evening very cheap cocktails and beer.
One reviewer on here said the place was dangerous, full of dodgy locals and If hanging out in a good locals bar with a few women wearing shorts skirts warrants that kind of review I suggest you stay in your 5 star upmarket cattle kind of hotel and not venture further than that!
